Making Eyewear Fashionable
In 1981, New York City was bustling with energy and creativity after near bankruptcy. Robert Marc, a licensed optician, saw an opportunity to make a name for himself and quickly opened his first eyewear boutique on Columbus Avenue. During this time, eyewear was perceived as a medical device as opposed to a fashion accessory and Marc was determined to change that. His mission was well received from the start and even caught the eye of major fashion labels. After working on eyewear collections for brands including Calvin Klein and Fendi, Marc launched his first collection, Robert Marc NYC, in 1999. This collection represented his vision towards the modern, classic and instantly recognizable. His philosophy was that “eyewear should enhance the vision of one’s self.”
Function & Fashion
For Robert Marc, designing and crafting frames is an art. Working with both the best Italian acetates and titanium, the American brand does not take the process lightly. Insisting on the highest quality, every frame is made entirely by hand. The styles are almost magical in their ability to fit and flatter your face. Robert Marc’s strategy for growth goes against the blueprint many fashion brands and retailers have lived by. The optician and eyewear designer hasn’t licensed out his name to other categories and you won’t even find his products sold online. In fact, he hasn’t changed his production process at all – each pair has been and still is handmade from start to finish.

On the Big Screen
Robert Marc NYC caters to a wide range of celebrity clients, including Uma Thurman, Nicole Kidman, Julianna Moore and Susan Sarandon. Marc’s designs turn up everywhere from the most fashionable metropolitan streets and designer runway shows to major motion pictures and television productions. Shortly after releasing his first line, he was contacted by a notable costume designer. This discovery led to an unforgettable partnership with Woody Allen. For over 20 years, Marc designed glasses exclusively for Allen to wear in all of his films.
